On Tuesday night, two officials from the Ayutla de los Libres City Hall were shot dead while traveling on the federal highway Mexico-Acapulco, confirmed the Guerrero State Attorney General's Office. In a statement on its social networks, the state Prosecutor's Office said it went to the scene after a report from the Investigative Police and institutional personnel, who gathered evidence to carry out investigations and clarify the facts. The victims were identified as Tomás Augusto Lozano, 38, Director of Public Works, and Francisco Bonilla Muñoz, 43, municipal treasurer of Ayutla de los Libres. Both were found dead inside a gray double-cab pickup truck, on the side of the road, at kilometer 06+800, past the Omitlán river bridge, on the Tierra Colorada-Ayutla de los Libres stretch, in the municipality of Juan R. Escudero. At the scene, FGE experts found 43 shell casings from long-barreled weapons, calibers .223 and 7.62, which will be part of the investigation file opened for intentional homicide. The bodies of both officials were transferred to the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) of Chilpancingo to carry out the legal autopsy. The institution stated that it will continue to provide official information as the investigations progress, always in compliance with due process. Meanwhile, the Three Coordinators and the Municipal Council of the Honorable House of the Peoples of Ayutla de los Libres issued condolences and death notices on social networks. Jesús Plácido Galindo, spokesman for the Guerrero Indigenous and Popular Council “Emiliano Zapata” (CIPOG-EZ), explained to the media that the officials were returning from the state capital after participating in a meeting, were traveling in a caravan, and the vehicle they were in separated from the convoy, losing contact with them. He pointed to the criminal group Los Ardillos as possible perpetrators and announced that together with the Union of Peoples and Organizations of the State of Guerrero (UPOEG) they will define the actions to be taken following the attack on both.
